“Where is the government? Let the truth come out,” the Jardinico family has appealed in an open letter to the public timed for the Christmas season as justice continues to elude them nearly six years after a fire killed 12 family members.

Franciscan Bro. Jun Jardinico, the family spokesperson, wrote they have already sent appeals and follow ups to officials from the local up to the national government. “But nothing had happened to our case for six years now. Where should we go for help?” he asked. “Does this government really work for justice for the poor like my family? If they care, why have we not felt the comfort of justice?” he added.

Fire gutted the family’s two-storey house in downtown Valencia City on April 6, 2003, killing 12 of the Jardinicos, including their elderly mother and seven children. Several other houses were razed in the incident.

At 2:30 a.m. in April 6, 2003, 12 members of the Jardinico family were trapped in their burning house in what was believed to be “intentional” over allegations of collusipn between a city official and another family who claimed ownership of the land where the house was built.

Seven of the 12 victims were children who were trapped in the 2-storey house in downtown Valencia City.

The Bureau of Fire Protection failed to stop the fire. Bro. Jun Jardinico has announced that five years later, the family still were not able to get a copy of the investigation report.

There were three suspects, two of them arrested within the year of the incident, but they were later released for lack of evidence.

The family believed that conspiracy “massacred” the family over selfish business interests.

The family’s matriarch was also killed in the fire now considered to be among the worst “inferno” in Philippine history according to an article by Manila Bulletin in 2005.
